Can anyone suggest a good RRS drawing tool (program), similar to TSS?

Thank you.

All the drawings that I've done have been with the SourceForge software that John M posted. There are really no instructions, so it's play-with learning ... but it works in the end. - Ang

I too use Boat Scenario, and have been responsible for some of the recent enhancements (and have developed some more that are yet to make it into the public release).

There is a short video on how to use Boat Scenario on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeKOqTXttFQ

If anyone has any ideas for further enhancements then please let me know.

Graham L, thanks for your work on this program, it's intuitive and fun to use. I would find it very useful to:

1) be able to add a protest flag to individual boat positions on a track (eg.; blue at pos. 5, yellow at pos. 7), and
2) be able to add blocks of text to a diagram (both "voice bubbles" for hails, and just ancillary explanatory text not attributed to a particular boat).

Thanks again!

You can add protest flags for individual boat position and also text bubbles, just text editing is a bit fiddly.
Make sure you have 201307 version installed.

Would love to be able to add wind/tide/current arrows.

Personally, I've been Jonesing for a free-area drawing tool that can be shaded/colored/hatched for shorelines or complex/unique obstructions if you are making a list.

It could simply be using the existing "polyline" but allowing it to be closed and then filled.

@John - Standalone text boxes are already on my to-do list.

@Ed - The 201307 version already has a wind arrow (and you can have the wind shift over time) - click the Show Wind checkbox in the Scenario pane (underneath the Zone Length). I have a work-in-progress version that allows you not only to have a tide/current arrow, but also has the boats move sideways (or whatever) with the tide/current, but that still has some bugs in it that need to be sorted out before it can be released.

@Ang - I have already implemented a fill colour for polylines, but it hasn't yet made it into the public release.

Ok .. Graham .. I'm up for the challenge .. how about this one .. ???
  • under the tracks-list .. how about adding an opacity or "dim" setting .. so you can 'dim' some of the tracks letting others stand-out?
How you like dem'apples? LOL

Graham,

Could you implement adding boats to a track going backwards from the first position?

One sometimes realises that it is necessary to go back a few steps after a diagram has been commenced.

Graham,

when exporting an animation under windows, sometimes boats will vanish between positions - any idea how to prevent that?
Is the forum on the sourceforge page still in use?
Where can we (or others) get in touch with you and discuss changes or problems?

Cheers

@Ang - Making it possible to dim a track shouldn't be too hard (individual boats already have a 'dim' attribute)

@John - Another one already on my to-do list (along with inserting a boat into the middle of a track)

@Thorsten - Sorry, I don't know how to fix the problem you report. The code that exports animations is all a bit of a mystery to me.

The forum on sourceforge is run by Thibaut Gridel, the original author of Boat Scenario (and a French IU and IJ). Unfortunately I am not a moderator and so cannot moderate posts on the forum - I like you cannot see them until Thibaut moderates them. (I note also that there seems to be quite a bit of spam on the forum).

If you would like to get in touch with me directly then I would be happy to receive emails addressed to: boatscenario@louths.org.uk

Please note however that I can make no promises whatsoever about how quickly, if at all, I will be able to reply to any emails - I have a full-time job and lots of other activities that keep me very busy. Boat Scenario development is something that I turn my mind to from time to time (generally in the middle of the winter!). Please note also that public releases of Boat Scenario have to date been managed by Thibaut - I do not know how to produce a publicly releasable version.

Graham, I'm not sure if you are still working on this project, but I see there was a recent release. I'm trying this after years of using TSS and I'm impressed. I'd love to see a couple enhancements if they are doable:

1. The topper shape is very much like the scows we race. For the cat rigged scows, that's perfect. If I could have an option of that hull shape with a jib and asymmetric spinnaker, that would be awesome.
2. I often use a black and white laser printer when I'm hearing protests. I'd love to be able to put unique textures on the boats in tandem with or exclusive of boat color.

Thanks!
