I'm giving a quiz on the racing rules at my club next week.... and have recorded my first run through of the summary and questions that I give.
If you're not from MYC then I'd appreciate any feedback on the quiz:  correctness, style and anything else!

Very good presentation!

Presumably the audience has already been exposed to the definitions? Otherwise if you know the rules but not the definitions you can't really answer some of the questions.

Smallish point but a pet peeve. On Question 5 you mention that "right of way is a concept in both COLREGS and racing rules." I don't think that's correct. In the International COLREGS the term "right of way" does not appear. Under COLREGS if you don't have a responsibility as "give-way" vessel you have an affirmative responsibility as "stand-on" vessel to maintain course and speed unless it's apparent that the give-way vessel isn't meeting her responsibility to keep clear (as you note in Question 11). COLREGS is all responsibilities and no rights.

Question 18, you could put in an arrow to indicate the direction of rounding, or you could turn it into a leeward gate and generate a discussion of "what about if they decide to go to the other gate?"

Question 19, I think you need to go a little further into the rule. If Orange isn't fetching the mark (it's not completely clear in the diagram if she is or not) or is fetching but would not have to change course to accommodate Blue's tack then Blue can hail for room to tack. You might also point out that Blue is still clear ahead or leeward ROW so although she may not be able to hail for room to tack she can luff Orange up to head to wind - Orange isn't entitled to stuff her into the atoll. And there's the question of mark-room/room at a continuing obstruction that can be explored.

Question 20, If the presentation is next week you might note that the clause for hails other than English doesn't take effect until January 1, and might also note the new rule 20.4 about making an additional signal. In any case you might also be more specific that Orange must either tack immediately or reply by hailing "you tack" and giving room

Greg,
I think the answer to Q 19 is wrong. This is both a mark and a continuing obstruction, and is covered by 19.1 which says

However, at a continuing obstruction, rule 19 always applies and rule 18 does not.

So it is a continuing obstruction and R 20 applies and Blue may hail for room to tack. R 20.1 restricts the hail if Orange was fetching the mark, but as drawn, she is not.

In addition, she shall not hail if the obstruction is a mark and a boat that is fetching it would be required to change course as a result of the hail.

John Ball - I agree that 19.1 means that 18 does not apply and 19 does... if all that was being asked for is Room to pass the obstruction.
But 19 doesn't allow room to tack. For that rule 20 is needed and I don't see anything that switches it off at a continuing obstruction that is a mark.   Edit: Do you have any cases that support that interpretation?

Tim - good feedback... including it.    I've recorded 2 50 minute sessions on the detail of part 2, so the quiz is just a refresher... but also doing a bit of teaching for those that wont sit through the 2 hours.   It's really hard to record those presentations and make them compelling.  Normally I present to people and the conversation that results makes it flow better.   Just presenting slide after slide is a bit dry... hence the idea of a quiz to lighten it up a bit.

in 19 20 it looked to me as if the windward boat was not fetching the atol so the other boat could hail.
The boat should tack or say you tack not the answer you gave.
