Hello sailors and race officials:
I am the chair of the Rule 18 Working Party of the World Sailing Racing Rules Committee. Our goal is to see if we can find ways to simplify rule 18 (Mark-Room) without changing the current game too much.
The clear reason is that of all the racing rules, sailors and race officials find rule 18 the longest, most complicated and most convoluted rule, making it difficult for experienced racers and race officials to apply it clearly and consistently on the water and in the protest room, and for inexperienced racers to learn the rule.
Our challenge is to find ways to simplify the rule without changing the game in unacceptable ways. We have some ideas we would like to get your input on this summer. We have three aspects of the rule we would welcome your feedback on.
If interested, simply reply to the questions in this Survey NO LATER THAN Sunday, August 15, 2021. The link to the Survey is below. The Survey should take no more than 30 minutes to complete. You are welcomed to discuss these questions with other sailors and race officials, and to forward this Survey to anyone you wish. Your input will be read with an open mind, and will be appreciated.
With thanks for giving your answers serious thought,
