Standard Penalties (Appendix P)

What Standard Penalties Are

Standard Penalties are on-the-water penalties entered by umpires or race officials for rule violations observed during racing — typically rule 42 (propulsion) violations under Appendix P, or similar penalty systems used in match and team racing. Unlike starting penalties (which cover OCS and related infringements at the start) or self-imposed turns penalties (which competitors take voluntarily), standard penalties are officially imposed by an umpire or the race committee and recorded against a specific boat and race.

Enabling and Entering Penalties

Enable Standard Penalties by editing your event and selecting Appendix P Penalties in Event Settings. Once enabled, a Standard Penalties link appears in the Event Panel. Officials with the appropriate role can create new penalty entries by specifying the boat (by sail number), the race number, the penalty type, and any notes. Penalties can be entered from a mobile device on the water immediately after the infringement is observed.

Notifications and Scoring

When a standard penalty is entered, the penalized competitor is notified by email and SMS. The penalty also appears on the public penalties page and on the Scoring Panel so the scorer can confirm it has been applied correctly in the scoring system. If a penalty is entered in error, it can be edited or removed by an official with editing rights.
